Abstract: | Two trials for testing the suitability of 42 imported varieties for commercial growing in Ghana were conducted at Nyankpala (guinea savanna zone) and at Yea dam site (sudan savanna zone). At Nyankpala variety CPC 2 gave reasonably higher yields than the control variety Roma, but there was wide variation in control plot yields. At Yea, Red Top and MHNF 145-21-4P gave the best yields (5·05 and 4· 24 tons/acre). Laboratory analyses for pulp yield, total soluble solids in pulp, content of reducing sugars and acidity indicated that MH/VF 145B, Pearson A-I and VF Roma had desirable qualities. These last named varieties are recommended for further trials |
