Non-chemical methods of controlling stored product insects in the tropics: a review

Abstract

Grains which have been shelled for storage needs to be protected as much as possible, from infestation by stored product insects. Controlling these insects by chemicals, like fumigants and contact insecticides is however, fraught with attendant hazards and problems. Alternatively, non-chemical methods are available. This report has, therefore, looked at the various non-chemical methods under the headings, physical, biological and good storage management. The report examined the principles underlying the various methods under each of these headlines. It also discussed how some of these methods could be used in a tropical country, like Ghana. Finally, an attempt has been made to show how an integrated pest management programme could be implemented by a grain store manager and/or farmer
